What AI Can & Can't Do
By the end of this lesson you will have a realistic picture of AI's abilities — so you can use it smartly and know when NOT to trust it.
Know what AI can do well
AI is genuinely excellent at certain things. Writing first drafts of almost any document. Summarising long texts into short points. Generating ideas and options. Explaining complex concepts in simple language. Translating between languages. Recognising patterns in large amounts of data. Answering factual questions about well-documented topics. Generating images, music, and video from text descriptions. Creating code from instructions. These capabilities are improving every month. The person who knows how to direct these capabilities has a superpower.
Know what AI cannot do
AI also has real limitations that you must understand. AI can sound very confident while being completely wrong — this is called "hallucination". Always verify important facts from AI with another source. AI does not know what happened recently unless it has been updated. AI does not understand deep cultural context — it does not truly understand what it means to grow up in Lagos, the significance of Owambe culture, or the nuances of Nigerian Pidgin the way you do. AI cannot form real relationships, make ethical judgements, or take physical actions in the world. These limitations are your opportunities.
Understand the Nigerian context gap
Here is something important that most people miss. AI was mostly trained on English-language content from Western sources. This means AI is weaker when it comes to Nigerian languages, Nigerian culture, Nigerian history, and Nigerian market knowledge. This is not a disadvantage for you — it is an advantage. A Nigerian student who understands AI and also understands the Nigerian market can build things that no AI can build alone. The tools exist. The local knowledge is yours. Put them together.
Ask ChatGPT a question that requires deep Nigerian cultural knowledge — something only someone who grew up in Nigeria would truly understand. For example: 'Explain the cultural significance of Owambe parties in Yoruba culture in detail.' Then ask a friend or family member if the answer is accurate. Notice where AI gets it right and where it misses the nuance.
